A company with a web site called Red Planet Land is selling land on Mars, or rather, what they are selling is an embossed linen piece of paper that says you own a specific piece of land on Mars. What this means to us, to the future, is more interesting and upsetting.

How silly. You can't sell land or property you don't own. How does Red Planet Land lay claim to Mars?
The only valid land claim anyone can make on land not already owned is that of a homesteader. That is, the first person to occupy and work the land.
Anyone who buys "title" from Red Planet Land might also be interested in some beach-front land I have for sale in Arizona...
